Larry:

Do you have any problem going uphill when the tank is full?  Have you 
eliminated the fuel pump itself as the problem?   When the fuel pump goes, it 
is difficult to drive uphill without the engine stalling, while it may go 
downhill just fine.  If the fuel pump is OK, then you might have a hole in 
the tube inside the tank at some level below which the pump does indeed suck 
air.
