I left Reno Sat. morning in the yellow car with a friend towing his bug-i
behind for the famous Feather River Canyon run to Chico. I invited you all
but as usual it was just me and my car.
The weather was warm, the sky blue and the road having been repaved a
couple of years ago was smooth.
After about twenty minutes of spritely driving with no traffic holding
me up I came up to the first slow car right at the first of two passing
zones in the Canyon. Didn't even drop a gear as I went by. Another 15
minutes went by and finally came up on two more cars at the second passing
zone again not dropping a gear passed both. Finally hit traffic at the
tunnels which is the end anyway. This means the whole Canyon was driven
just as fast I as I wanted. Waited half an hour for the trailer to catch up
at the rest stop thinking maybe I should just turn around and head home
cause it just can't get no better.
On to Chico where we arrived just in time to run the rally as the only
out of town team. This was a great tour of the foothills east of Chico.
We did have a slight problem on the rally as when we went through
Paradise, Ca the local high school cheerleaders were having a car wash/ ice
cream event. Because I knew the big show was tomorow, I had to watch the
girls like a hawk to be sure they got the car clean. They seemed to have a
problem getting the very bottom of the car clean and I had to make them do
these parts over a couple of times. Well back to the rally, or off to the
local jail.
Dinner on the creek and a good nites sleep led to the show on Sunday.
Where we was robbed as usual. My friend David's bug-i and mine were put in
the big healey class so the locals would win again really a shame as my car
was cleaner than it has been for many years. The 4X4 Midget wasn't there
this year, but the owner gave me a picture that was passed on to a list
member to be posted for all to see.
The Reno club had a tech sesion on fixing the alternator on a Morgan
using the ramps on David's trailer as a lift, and a mix of all our tools,
and you thought the one on the sprite is a pain.
Did I mention it was HOT. After leaving the show and driving to Steve's
house in Sac (did I mention it was real HOT) for dinner and a look at
Paul's 5-speed kit.
Heading out of Sac I could see some flashes to the east and smelled
smoke. At least it wasn't hot anymore ( I did mention it was very HOT in the
valley didn't I?). The run to Reno was fine and a little cool over the
pass. I got a few rain drops on the windscreen as I pulled off the freeway
in Reno and the road was wet from some rain earlier in the day.
Total for two days was 534 miles and average for the trip was 41.3
MPG with gas costing around $1.65/gal. Biggest expense off the weekend was
the $10 for the car wash in Paradise ( best money I've spent in years) and I
won't wash the car again this year.
You should have been there, but that was your problem.
        Crash
