MG running rough

My car performed well at the PA rally. The only real problem I
noticed was that if I let the car idle for several minutes I would
start to smell gas and the car would run rough and stumble on
acceleration. After I revved the engine and ran through the gears it
would go back to normal. It also sometimes has a slight miss at speed.
I figure I have several problems not just one, and as one lister put
it, "70 percent of all carburetor problems are electrical," I have to wonder
where to start. This is what I have done to the car and what I think:

The car has dual SU with no heat shield. The plug, points, dizzy cap,
rotor, wire, and condenser was changed less than 500 miles ago. The fuel
filter was changed within 200 miles. The car has a NAPA electric fuel
pump that puts out about 4-5 PSI. On Tuesday morning the car was hard
to start, backfired and missed till it warmed up. Today it was fine.

I was thinking that without a heat shield I might be boiling the fuel
in the carburetor and winding up with extra gas in the carburetor throat.

Anybody have any other ideas of what to try or where to look? I
realize this is a very fuzzy description and really hard to get an
handle on via e-mail, but thanks for listening.
