Dan,

The way I have successfully done this in the past is with a small 
triangular file. If you proceed slowly and check with the nut as you 
go, you should be fine. I would use a wire wheel to clean it up 
nicely first and then use a magnifying glass to examine where the 
problems lie in the threads
