Ok, here's what I want to guess at.

Push rod in upside down?
Wrong pushrod? different engines used different sizes, so when you store 
them, use different coffee cans like I do ;) 948 /1275
Maybe something happened to the rocker arm, did it get bent?
You can remove the rocker arm assembly without replacing the head gasket.
Drain the coolant to below the head (bottom hose off at the water pump)
Loosen ALL the head bolts in sequence but keep the plug side nuts a bit 
snug, remove the rocker and carb side nuts.
Hopefully the plug side nuts are tight enough to keep the head gasket seal.
I have successfully reused head gaskets before.
Hell, I used a used head gasket on a different engine when I was in a 
pinch. Sometimes you just don't have a spare H/G in your sack of spares.
that was then, I now carry a complete head set in my sack of spares.
