Thread-topic: Tranny and starter problem
Hello,

Today (well, ok, yesterday), I replaced my started for the 4th time
(thanks to chucks lifetime warranty).

The problem is that the starter basically does not engage after a while
(ie: grinds on the flywheel).
I checked the flywheel and the inner part (in the bell housing) is rough
(at touch), so I am assuming that my flywheel teethes are in bad shape
and are destroying the starters.

What would be your opinion as to what is happening given that
information and what do you think I should do?
- keep replacing the starters every 6 months or so as it does not cost
me a dime (only time) while replacing the flywheel would be expensive
- get the flywheel out and file the "sharp" points?
- change the flywheel and pay big boxes?

In addition to that, I have a grinding noise 1 out of every 10 times I
use the first gear. I imagine that this is a worn synchro ring. What do
you think?

My plan for both these issues is to:
- get the tranny out
- open the tranny and see what I can do for the first gear
- while the tranny is out, I should have access to the flywheel and be
able to file the offensive teethes on the flywheel.

- Do you think that this is a good plan?
- How hard is it to replace wheels in the gearbox? Am I over my head?
- Can I remove the tranny without removing the engine?
