For some reason, I've also seen dampers where the timing mark is completely
different in relation to the key slot to others. So, the damper mark may be
incorrect.

I always make sure I know where TDC is, and add a pointer JB welded on the
front timing cover where it's easily seen on my race motors.

Kurtis,

Sometimes the dots on the timing gears are not in the correct  
(original) place on the new gears.  Especially if they are not  
original parts.  I've had gears that when the dots are lined up the  
timing is out as much as 20 degrees.  That set of gears were made in  
India.
