Those fancy ones with the billet flanges are not within my budget. When I put
the Isuzu version in my Sprite, I couldn't get enough room to hammer in the
footbox. So I cut out a corner of the footbox and made a little 'box' that
provided a recess in the corner of the footbox. I welded up the box but
riveted it in to the car/footbox. Took some time but far less cash than the
modified starters.

The motors are the same. The difference is the "head" of the starter.
TheGustafson version has a head that keeps the motor close to the car's
engine. The Isuzu trooper version has a head that has the starter motor held
away from the engine. You have to pounda bit of the firewall onthe car for the
Isuzu version to clear it. Also, the battery connection on the starter is
underneath the starter motor when it is installed, so it is a bit inconvenient.

The Isuzu version can be bought for $65, while the Gustafson type stuff range
from $190 to $250 or so. The extra amount you're paying is for is makingthe
head from billet. The actual starter is no better than the Isuzu.

Also, you can buy the Isuzu starter at your local auto parts store with a
lifetime warranty. If it fails, just take it back. I've done this at a race
weekend when I've had one fail (racecars are tough on 'em, but I've got a mod
for that now). Go to http://tinyurl.com/2lnxdsandsee an example.
