My gauge indicated 1/2 all the time. I dropped the tank (easier than i
thought: lift the rear of the car, put a jack under the tank so it
doesnt fall, take off the filler tube, unscrew the tank and take it
off... oh yes, empty the tank first).

I dismantled the sender unit and it had seized half way. Careful when
taking the sender unit off: as mine had seized, the floater arm was
perpendicular from the core unit and I struggled a bit to take the unit
out of the tank. I managed though, so you should as well. I could loosen
the float arm and now the gauge works fine.

Hope this help
