X1/9 was on my short list of cars I was looking for when I bought the Midget. 
Didn't get one because I couldn't find a decent example for a reasonable price
at the time.  They can be made very fast with the 2.0L from a Lancia Beta and
look appropriately wicked if you replace the tins with Dallara panels.  I
wonder if something like one of the Type R Honda drivetrains would fit...
 
now THAT would be fun to drive.
