We had special tools for that. We had a universal tool consisting of a
shaft with interchangeable bushings in the front and a tapered cone in
the back. It worked reasonably well. We also had an assortment of old
transmission input shafts that we used when they fit. I think nowadays
you can buy plastic ones, at least that looks like what I've seen used
in the car shows on tv.
