Flounder:

I heard a very similar "discovery" recently from a couple of friends who
pulled their '53 Ford to Mexico for the Carrera Panamerican. They had gotten
this huge Pace American enclosed trailer and Ford lent them the largest,
heaviest Ford Explosion SUV to pull it. There was plenty of space in the
trailer for spares, tools, etc., but virtually no weight capacity. (and '53
Fords are relatively light for American iron). And when you loaded the
trailer in then "normal" way-- tools, spares, small bench in the front of the
trailer, tongue weight was unmanageable. They didn't take a lot of stuff and
still exceeded the trailer's GVW by about 60%. Fortunately, specs for the
trailer hitch were conservative and they made it down and back with no
problems.
