You haven't done anything "wrong". The one thing you might have left out is
checking (and renewing) the rocker shaft and bushings; those can cause low oil
pressure or wavering pressure.

Which, as always, leads me to a plug for Rocker Arm Specialists, who will renew
the whole system for about what it costs to buy a new rocker shaft.

Synthetic oil will help the low oil pressure "problem" because it doesn't thin
as much when warm. But face it - some decrease in pressure is inevitable,
because the clearances open up as the engine gets warm, and the oil thins out a
bit as it warms, too.
