Barry;
   Are you *sure* this is the *OIL* light and not the charging system light?  
Oil lights are often green, high beams blue and alternator/generator warning 
lights red.  The RPM your red light comes on is typical for the charging cut out
point for most Lucas Alternators.  If it *is* the oil warning light, try 
replacing the oil pressure warning switch at the engine... it might be faulty 
and be indicating at much higher pressure than it should be.  They are not very 
expensive.  You should be able to trust your gauge, but you also should be able 
to get its calibration checked, if necessary.
