Sure, just put the car in gear and roll it a bit by hand, or while the plugs 
are out you can turn it by hand.  If you use the in gear method just 
remember that the higher the gear the easier it will be to move, but you'll 
have to move it more.  I usually do it by hand with the plugs out since I'm 
checking valve clearances anyway.

Sounds like you did just fine on your first "adventure".
