Some weeks back I requested info on figuring why my ignition light
was reluctant to go out. I fiddled with the control box but despite
a decent charge from the dynamo I couldnt see what was wrong.
NB: dont touch these things, if you get it wrong you can short the
dynamo with the ignition off - the dynamo will try to "motor" but cant.
Anyhow full marks to Larry Synder who suggested my dynamo was
faulty. I disregarded this sound advice as I knew better, but my
uncle (aged 88!) spotted the commutator sparking, so I pulled the unit.
Sure enough, the commutator had chunks missing and was in a sorry
state, so thanks Larry.
My problem(s) with dynamos stem from the fact that I bought a bunch of
them for a fiver from a rebuilder, but I guess what happened was that
in the 60's & 70's, my units were exchanged for working ones & remained
dormant in the rebuilders shed for 25 years. I show up & buy these old
wrecks => guess what, they are rather suspect ... !
The most common faults have been armature failures, I suppose the
insulation breaks down over (a long long) time.
I intend to get an exchange dynamo, & build up one decent one from the
carcasses. Anyone want old dynamo bits ....
