The lower, tapered threads (in the T-fitting) are pipe threads, and are 
designed to seal well without any sealant.  I used teflon tape, myself, just 
to be sure.

If you're not leaking, that's great -- you win; if anyone else leaks there try 
a dab of pipe thread compound or a layer of teflon tape.
