Put the thermostat back in place on the TR and installed a cheesy
cardboard airflow diverter through the grill. Voila! Almost no more
heating problem. On a warm day, temp dropped from the 3/4 mark to 185 deg
or lower - as long as the car is moving. On cool days or at highway speed
its below 185.
At stop lights, however, it climbs right back up toward 3/4. May
solve this one with an electric fan or I may try an idea I picked up from a
TR-3 owner at a rally. He installed a TR-6 fan in his 3. One look at the
design of the fan in the 6 and its position about 1/4 inch from the grill
tells the story - clearly Triumph's response to the overheating complaints
of TR-3 owners.
As far as I'm concerned this also lays to rest any question
remaining question regarding the need to keep the thermo in place - ya gotta
slow that water down so the radiator can do its job right.
Thanks once again to all who tendered advice.
