You may have already checked these, but I didn't see them mentioned, so -
How 'bout the drive-shaft U-joint(s) ? (Propeller shaft in BritSpeak)
Yes, they're hidden up under the exhaust pipe -- which also may be moving
with engine movement, and hitting the frame or something else down there.
Also, if the stock rubber bushings in the rear swing-arm mounts are really
gone, and all the dry, rotted rubber has fallen out, you'd have metal-to-
metal contact possible in the situation you describe.
