The apparent solution to ALL of this is expensive, but I think I'm going
to take the plunge. A British outfit called Cambridge Motorsport makes
a "direct-acting hydraulic system" which mounts directly to the nose of
the tranny and eliminates crossarm, fork, worn clevis pins, etc. It is
also said to greatly reduce the force required to operate the clutch,
which sounds great to me. The price of this unit is 346 pounds -
 haven't seen it stateside yet.

If anyone has experience with one of these units, I would like to hear
 about it.

Mark-

This setup sounds suspiciously like the setup that both Ford and Jeep, among
others, are now using on some of their vehicles. My limited (and unwanted)
experience with this type of bearing/hydraulic cylinder seems to be negative.
While in theory, it sounds like "the hot setup", in reality it seems as
though the environment (hot and dusty) inside the bell housing, takes its
toll on the hydraulic part of the unit. Changing the slave cylinder on an lbc
can be a pain in the you know what, but consider that you have to remove the
driveline/transmission to change the pesky cylinder when it is inside the
bell housing. (Wanna pull all the 4 wheel drive junk off a Jeep, just to
change the little bugger? - no, me neither).

Just my completely biased opinion here...
