Ken Streeter says:

Easiest way to check is to hook up a tach/dwell meter to one of the
spark plug wires, have a partner rev the engine up and hold it
steady. It is then easy to check to see how far your tach is off.

The Stag tach and TR6 engine shouldn't make any difference. However,
your tach may be out of adjustment, which isn't particularly unusual.
At least if you learn how far off it is, you can avoid the redline
on your own...

Barry Schwartz says:

It means (if it's electric) that you have a tach designed to recieve 8
pulses per revolution instead of the six your getting. It also means you
either have to get a six cylinder tach or have that one re-calibrated for
the six banger-

 Scott Kohl says:

The answer may be that the gearing in the TR6 distributor is different
than the Stag. The trick would be matching the gearing, perhaps
through an inline gear reduction unit. An acquaintance of mine had
such a unit installed on his TR6, to allow him to use his
non-overdrive speedo with an overdrive 'box. He told me a shop that
does speedo/tach calibrating did the work.

Lenny Seidman says:

The Stag tach is for an 8 cylinder engine while the TR6 engine is 6
cylinders. Cobra kit builders use Stag tachs because they look British
(and are!) and will work with american V8 engines.

I say:
Thanks guys but I'm still confused. Is it electrical or mechanical? Can
calibration solve the problem or is it an impossibility to have a 8 cylinder
tach reading a 6 cylinder revs? Anybody else got any bright ideas. BTW a
TR6 tach would not look right or even fit in a STAG dash so that's not an
option.
