The carburetor is a Weber down draft.  It hasn't been taken off the
stands yet, so I don't know how it runs as I am cruising.  The symptoms
are:  
1)  runs slightly rough.
2)  as I rev. the car, it "spits" out of the carburetor (noticeably in rhythm).
3)  I don't think it "spits" on deceleration.
4)  Timing is at 10 degrees BTDC @ 800 RMP w/o vacuum advance.
5)  It holds a high RPM with no problem, it is having a hard time getting
there.
6)  The mixture screw has been moved to both extremes with no
success (so far).
7)  I want my little car fixed (whine!)

Generically speaking, dealing strictly with fuel supply, when a carb
backfires out the intake, the car is running too lean--exhaust backfires
come from over-richness.  You didn't specify if your running a DCOE or
DGAV. Does the backfiring go away after the car warms up? Does it
only backfire when you accelerate, cruising at a level speed, or at idle. 
How about some specifics?
