This weekend I will shift my attention from the rear of the TR6 (did the
diff last weekend you may recall) to the front. I want to replace a
leaking front seal. I will also replace the timing cover gasket. I have
these parts. I also have the front engine plate gasket but am not sure
if I want to go that far into the engine (to change this gasket, removal
of the timing chain and sprockets is required).
Should I do any more than just the seal and timing cover gasket? My
engine has 72000 miles and is in very good shape, I think. Oil pressure
is 80 @ startup, 45-50 running warm.
I have considered the timing chain tensioner as a potential candidate
since this part is available locally and cheap.
For those who will suggest replacing the timing chain, I have some
questions.
1. What will I gain if I replace the chain but not the sprockets?
2. How does one tell if the chain needs to be replaced?
3. I can get a chain locally for $19 Canadian. TRF sells two chains for
the TR6 (at least in their catalogs - don't know if both are usually
available). One is "original brand" and $26 US and the other
"after-market" and $14 US. Anyone know what the "original" brand is and
if it is desirable over the after-market brand? Any brands of chain to
avoid? (ie. does Quinton Hazell make chains?)
Anything else I should consider doing while I have al this stuff at the
front apart/off?
