There seems to be a difference of opinion as to what the noise is that I'm
hearing when the car is in neutral and the clutch is up (only).

Bob, yes and no. When running and under load than yes, but when stopped at
a light or while in neutral in your driveway the noise, if
counter/layshaft, or first motion shaft bearing (or pilot) will stop,
because these items will stop revolving when the clutch is disengaged.
(i.e. pedal depressed and of course the clutch is functioning normally)
