I would switch to synthetic after you reach 1000 miles on each engine.
Apparently sythetics don't allow engines to "break-in" properly, so that is
why you should postpone using synthetics 'til after 1000 miles. I use
Mobil 1 synthetic in my TR6 (and in our Toyota Corona). I enjoy longer oil
change intervals than with conventional motor oil (every 6000 miles) to
offset the greater cost of synthetic. From what I've heard on the oil
change intervals, 6000 miles is probably more frequent than necessary.

I would not waste money on synthetic motor oil in an old engine, but on a
rebuild or on a low mileage motor that has been cared for properly with
conventional motor oil, I think synthetics are the only way to go!!
