Cliff,
I went though this thought process myself a while back. I was thinking
of having a machinist friend turn some nice stainless pistons but in the
end I went ahead and bought the regular (chrome-plated?) ones as by then
I had decided to use DOT-5 fluid, which apparently doesn't cause these
problems. In the midst of this, I began to search for the exact diameter
of the pistons, but never found it. Perhaps someone on the list can
provide same.
You can buy the stainless or the others from the big 3 or maybe the BPC,
but I understand the temptation to make them:
1. Living in Canada, multiply price of piston by 1.55 or so.
2. Living in Canada, first earn 2x the amount required to net the amount
required after taxes.
3. Throw in $15-20 US for shipping.
4. You need 4 pistons, not just one.
5. Living in Ontario, add 15% for PST and GST.
And suddenly, like magic, you need to earn about $375 for four of those
$25 pistons!
(OK, enough complaining; it's what you pay to live in the best country
in the world.)
Apologies for that shameless plug to citizens of other fabulous
countries, and Merry Christmas to all.
Regards,
Jim Wallace

Subject: caliper pistons

Listers,
I need to replace the caliper pistons for the front brakes, and have
considered making new ones myself. However, I seem to recall someone at
some point telling me that these should be made from stainless steel, as
the brake fluid will react with carbon steel over a period of time. If
this is the case, why would there not be a problem with the tubing,
fittings and calipers themselves? Has anyone had experience with this?
The list has been a great help to me so far, and I appreciate the
assistance and advice provided here. On that note I wish all a joyous
Christmas, and a happy and prosperous new year.
Regards,
Cliff Pike
