This is a classic problem of a gearbox with excessive wear.  The solution is a 
gearbox rebuild which is not very expensive if you do it yourself.  But I would 
rate the rebuild as not for the beginner.  If you do your own work and consider 
yourself "mechanicly inclined"... give it a shot.  A Haynes manual will take 
you through it step-by-step.  The Triumph Workshop Manual is a reference source 
but does not have enogh info to do the job.
The problem is likely a result of too much play in the bushings and spacers 
between the geras on the mainshaft.
If you can try the other gearbox convieniently thats a good path.   But you a 
gambling on "what's behind curtain 3"
