If I'm painting near threads or other important things, I like to
smear grease over anything that shouldn't be painted. With oil-base
paints, the grease mixes with the paint and makes a disgusting sludge that
can be wiped off with a rag after the rest of the paint dries.

The biggest problem is that you're introducing an extra ingredient that
might foul things up (grease tends to get *everywhere* if you're not
*really* careful). Masking tape works too, but it sometimes is tough to
remove.

For me, front suspension is 'next year's project'. This year I put a soft
top on, and finish the rocker.
