Sounds like an exhaust leak. You might fire the car up at night and look
around the manifold gasket. You might be able to see light (burning gas)
along the manifold.

First off, I haven't forwarded this specifically to all who have responded,
simply because I cannot seem to get my email program to recognize your
addresses. However, I WANT TO THANK ALL WHO HAVE SHOWN INTEREST / REMORSE /
PITY AND WHO HAVE PROVIDED HELPFUL HINTS. They have all been great.

Now back to the problem at hand. (Yes, I am grasping at straws before I
have to pull the engine.) 8^)

Well, while I'm not sure whether my sound is a "farty exhaust" (what ever
that is) noise, Rob Swift's calling his sound a VW Bug like noise, is a far
better explanation of my engine sound than any I could muster (Rat tat tat
tat tat). If you can all close your eyes and picture a Bug taking off from
a stop, the cadence and the sound are very similar in nature. Mine may be
just a little louder, but maybe not. But the noise still only kicks in at
approximately 2500 rpm.

With this info, any thoughts? (Although I'm still braced for the news that
it is still the Rods - dummy.)

P.S. Bud Rolofson: Maybe we could meet up and you could hear this awful
noise first hand. That might help you have a better idea of what is wrong.
Let me know if that is possible.
