The weld wire class determines the strength capability of the weld, not the
use of gas or flux or not. The flux is there to simply generate a shielding
gas environment around the weld puddle to preclude weld oxidation which will
embrittle the weld. This shielding gas is obtained with both flux and gas.
There are advantages regarding ease of use (or non-ease of use, depending on
your perspective) for gas and for flux. The weld joint design and the
quality of the weld (lack of porosity, no inclusions, etc.) determine what
strength is actually obtained in the finished weld.
