Hi Ken,

You said in your post "pushing out".  As I understand it, which of course
doesn't mean its right, the older bullet nose starter pushed out, the newer
starter actually pulled in, that is the bendix is on the far side of the
flywheel and it comes towards the front of the car when engaging.

I also was under the impression that the new gear reduction starters are not
available for the bullet nose set-up, all of which makes me wonder if you
have a compatible ring gear/starter set.  The way to check is to look at the
teeth on the ring gear and see which way the bevel goes, or feel around to
see if there are any bolts holding the ring gear onto teh flywheel. The
older style is held on by compression.
