List,
Thanks to all who responded and gave some peace of mind that I wasn't
overcharged on the work performed on CF38690's block.
The reason I had the engine at the machine shop is to have it spec'ed
out because it never performed as well as I felt it should have
following a rebuild in 1992 in which a number of performance upgrades
were performed. I found out the hard and expensive way that the machine
shop that did the original work was cheap for a reason. The valve job
was done poorly so that the valves sat at different heights and never
seated properly. The crank and rods were not balanced properly creating
a worse problem than had no balancing effort been made and most
expensively, the cylinders were bored
at differing diameters. Some were off to the point I was experiencing
mild piston slap.
My bargain machine work ended up costing a lot of money but I gained
some valuable experience and learned some lessons. Major lesson: Check
every bit of work done and then check it again. Buy or borrow the
micrometers and other measuring instruments needed to insure that the
work is properly performed and the replacement parts are the correct
fit. Work with your machine shop closely so there is no misunderstanding
of exactly what you want and expect from them in terms of quality.
I hope no one else has to suffer the frustration and expense I endured
because of shoddy workmanship and customer naivety and ignorance.
