Absolutely !  Any time you are having major work done by someone you
don't know personally, whether it's your car, boat, house, whatever, you
should _start_ with what you want done and how you want it done written
on a piece of paper.  Ask your painter (or whatever) for help and advice
if you want, negotiate if necessary, but when you are done, write down
what you agreed on, give him a copy and keep a copy for yourself.  If
time or cost is an issue, put that down too.  IMO anyone that objects to
this process was planning to rip you off anyway !

As the saying goes "A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written
on".  The days when a man's word was his bond are unfortunately long
gone.
