I have now removed all the components from under the bonnet so I can clean
up the fenders and block. I am also cleaning/replacing various components
hoping to improve appearance as well as reliability. A couple of questions
have come up:
1 The exhaust manifold has broken off around one of the bolt holes. It is
at a hole where there are 2 exhaust ports and about 1/3 of the
circumference around the hole is missing. Is this going to be a problem?
I could not find new ones listed. The manifold is in good shape otherwise.
Is it worth trying to weld. I think cast iron needs to be preheated before
welding.
2 I'm not sure what to do about the EGR valve. The tube to the manifold is
completely plugged. And I bent the one brass coupling trying to remove. I
think I will just clean it up on the outside and not worry about it.
3 I remember a thread about a new starter that was real good. I don't
remember who sold it. The present Lucas starter works good but I was
thinking about replacing it anyways.
4 Any quick checks that can be done on a transmission which is not in a
car? I am looking to buy a spare.
Thanks for any advise.
