Jim :

My understanding is that Triumph changed their recommendation sometime
around 1960.
The original TR2/3 factory manuals definitely specified engine oil,
either 20, 30 or 50 weight depending on climate. There is even a
warning against using "hypoid gear oil" in cars fitted with OD, both in
the driver's manual and in the OD service manual.

However, there was a later factory publication covering TR 2/3/4 that
specified GL4 gear oil, even for cars with OD. According to an article
published by Ken Gillanders, he spoke with a "factory contact" who
confirmed that the recommendation had been changed, due to premature
gearbox wear on some units.

So, "you pays yer money and yer takes yer cherse". Personally, I use
Valvoline 20W50 Racing oil in my A-type OD tranny (on Ken's
recommendation), and I'm quite happy with it.

PS We might as well dive into this topic again, it sure beats trashing
TRF or Ken Shapiro. <g>
