Michael,

Poly mounts are fine for racing.  Your friend is correct about the
stiffness.  I don't
believe that it would increase the likelihood of cracks, but it will
increase the noise
in the passenger compartment due to the improved transmission of noise
through
the stiff mounts.  The originals are much more forgiving.
