| Another method that is sometimes useful (eg when there isn't enough stud
exposed for double nutting or a stud extractor) is to take a nut of the
proper thread, and cut through one side vertically with a cutoff tool. 
Thread the nut onto the stud, then clamp a pair of vice grips on so they
squeeze the slot closed.  You can get a very strong grip this way
(stronger than double-nutting), without damaging the threads.  If
necessary, you can loosen the vice grips, turn the nut a little, and
clamp again.
