>I'm going to fix my (major) oil leak in the next few weeks. I plan on
either installing a speedi-sleeve or purchasing a new sealing ring
(can't remember the exact name, slips over the crank and provides the
surface that the seal lip rides on, costs $20 from TRF). I would like
to do this in the least invasive maner possible - with out removing the
timing cover ( since it does not leak!). Is either installing a
speedi-sleeve over the sealing ring or replacing the sealing ring
possible with out removing the timing cover? BTDT advice gladly
solicited - I've never played with a speedi-sleeve.

Aribet,

I forget what car you have but to my knowledge only the TR8 will
allow you to replace the front main seal without removing the
timing cover (if you have seen the cover you will realize why they
set it up that way). All the other's with which I am familiar have the
seal installed from the inside so you must remove the cover to
remove/install the seal.

Since the Speedi-sleeve is pressed onto the harmonic balancer
you can (must) remove the balancer and the sleeve can then be
pressed on. The balancer can then be reinstalled into the lod seal
and all without disturbing the timing cover. But if the seal is 30 years
old it is likely hard and the primary cause of the leak.

Good luck

Dave
