Wild Tach Needle

Asking on behalf of a friend who drives a '69 Morgan....

The car has a points ignition with an electronic tach. At times the
tach needle swings wildly, most other times it reads correctly.

I would guess the problem is in the distributor, not the tach... perhaps
a chafed wire?

ISTR a similar problem being discussed here -- perhaps it was on TR7?
Anyway, I know this occurs with electronic tachs but couldn't recall if
there is a typical cause.

Thanks for any help.
