Repeated the oil thing on the road on a second drive (with original dizzy &
coil) to assure myself this was not coincidence. This was the trial &
error
process I mentioned.

Then by all means check the dighrams. It is possible that the overflow oil
is sealing up a tear in the dighram enough allow acceptable operation - at
lwas teporarily.
