Daniel,
        Well, that confirms it for me.  I'll paint the area behind the grille 
black.  
Since I am working in an unheated garage, a paint brush and a space heater 
is the best I can do.  So, I will be totally original by using a brush. ;-)
        It seems that this step is often missed in a restoration.
        Thanks also to Will and Phil for their confirmation of this arcane 
detail.

i found this interesting myself being in massachusetts,my tr a 70 has been 
painted several times and each missed the grille opening.
