Also remember when refinishing wood not to use polyurethane unless you plan
on throwing it out or sanding through the veneer the next time it needs
work.
Use lacquer, shellac, tung oil, etc., which are very effective, hard
finishes. When it comes time to work on them again, you can easily strip
them.
Actually shellac might not be so good for a dash, since its based on alcohol
for a solvent. Spill a drink on it, & it might show if not cleaned up
quickly.
Polyurethane is for decks.
If you've still got your original dash, & its only problems are cracked
finish & a few splits along the grain in the veneer, I'd say you could
probably save it. Strip it carefully with standard Homer Formby stuff, dry
it out, glue it a bit here & there where needed, fill the cracks with a
filler you like (this is standard even with new open grained woods like
mahogany), & put a new finish on it.
I wish I'd kept my original dash. But then, the main problem was getting
those little white labels.

before u apply new varnish. original finish comes off very slowly; with
stripper, be patient.
