I prefer to replace the boards(pans) with the body off the frame, with door
jam braces,and obviously do not remove the inner sill or rocker panel at the
same time as they will provide your alignment.  Then you are better able to
deal with the sill mounting gussets properly,enter the inside(back side) of
the rocker panel clean and treat for any corrosion that exists.  Some folks
I have heard talk about cutting out the old board leaving a flange around
the attach points and tack welding through 3/16" punched holes or spot
welding around that flange but IMHO that seems like a butcher job.
Two years ago on my 74 six, I replaced both boards myself, and am very
pleased with the whole job, even the previous owner claims that the body
gaps look better than when he owned the car. I have pictures of the process,
if you wish I will send to you.
