David,
I am not familiar with a 3 but I have had a little experience transporting
cars. Does your 3 have tow points like a Spitfire,on the rear of the frame?
I use 10k pound nylon straps with the heavy wire hooks, but I also have tie
down points on my trailer. I attach the front straps to holes in the frame,
you can also wrap these style straps over and hook them to themselves,
unlike with the wide flat style hooks. I wanted to do the tire wrap style
tie downs also.
But I was unable to locate them locally at a reasonable cost ( as in cheap).
Another trick I learned from my Drag racing friends was crossing the rear
straps to hold the car more securely in place.

I found that the tie down points are an indespesible must, and for the cost
and the limiting of aggravation, well worth the time and money. I also
bolted two fold down style metal wheel chocks to the trailer floor, where I
want my car to set. So it is in the same place everytime I load it, no more
guessing. It also gives you a place that is centered on the trailer to aim
for.

Hope these help,

Larry
