Dave, not only are some modern starters permanent magnet, but it appears I
was wrong about Lucas not making any.  See

for a nice description of the permanent magnet starters.

I still don't believe Triumph ever used any of these, the magnet technology
wasn't discovered until sometime in the 80's ...

I stand by my previous statement.  It's just that I didn't know about these
before.  Note that this is a gear reduction starter and the motor is a high
speed, low torque motor as opposed to the old direct drive which requires
much more torque from the electric motor.  I wonder if Ted's starters are
PM?

And indeed, they weren't used in Triumphs.  Especially on any model where
one would consider changing from positive ground.
