Been playing w/ my TR4 and it's starting to
run quite nicely. Was out driving in a sporting fashion last week and had an
interesting failure. Winding it out in second and "clunk" and forward motion
stopped. Engine still runs fine but passenger side rear axle seems to have
given up. Have an older TR2/3 axle (splined on both ends) and I hear they're
not very good. Am looking for an "official" TR4 diff assembly to improve in
this dept.

Wondered if you've pulled axles. I decided to take the drivers side drum and
axle hub off just to make sure everything's shipshape and also to check the
brakes. That side came apart fine but the passenger side is just frozen. I
mean the castellated nut that holds the hub onto the axle. I've of course
taken out the cotter pin. I've doused it w/ solvent, let it sit and then put
a 1" drive breaker bar on and it will NOT come loose. Going to heat it and
try again. Just wanted to make sure it is a standard counterclockwise loosen
item. It's also missing the plain washer behind the nut and my guess someone
put it on w/ an air wrench. Other possible I guess is that it's never been
apart and that's 35 years.

Cheers
Jim Watson
