To amplify slightly on this, the word of even older old-timers, those
farmers who grew up with Model Ts, is that one should not grip the crank
with a thumb encircling the crank handle. Gripping the handle in that
way induces one of two results if the engine kicks backwards--one's
thumb is broken, or, alternatively, if the kickback is forceful enough
and one's thumb bones survive, one is launched into the weeds, ass over
teakettle, and breaks some other bone upon landing....
