Ian,
Switches in the top of the gearbox cover determine which gears the OD can be
switched on. The first A Type ODs could be used only in 4th gear. The A
type was then changed to created greater force on the clutch so that it
could be used in 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gears. The J type used in the '73 and
later TR6s has less force on the clutch and the electrical circuit is
arranged so that OD can be engaged only in 3rd & 4th gears.
