front end clunk

I drive into work, hit the brakes hard, CLUNK! From the right front! Ok I
shake it, bounce it, rock it, no clunk. I drive it out again: over bumps (not
very hard), no clunk; around corners, no clunk; step on the brakes, no clunk;
hit the brakes hard, CLUNK!; let the brakes off, CLUNK!
Get home tonight, pull off the wheel. Every thing looks OK. Yes, the wheel
was on tight. Knock the caliper, check for loose bolts, all looks OK.
Then I see it. The more or less horizontal frame section to which the upper
fulcrum pin is bolted is separating from the vertical frame section below it
at the rear and the front edge is cracking. There is a hole punched in the
inner fender that matches one end the fulcrum pin!
So what now. Since I have neither the equipment nor knowledge to weld this, I
guess I take a trip to the frame and axle shop to see what they can do.
When life looks like easy street, there is danger at your door.
Any advice?
