Because it's much less efficient that way (in particular, the non-running
fan blocks the radiator, causing it to run more).
The fax extension bolt is a normal, right hand thread. Replace it with
a shorter grade 8 bolt.
Don't know what you have planned, but I mounted my electric fan on
the front suspension cross-brace with a couple of U bolts. Works great!
